Torrey Dining Scene

Torrey, Utah, with a population of just 180, is a tiny town that spans a few blocks along state Route 24. Thanks to its location eight miles from Capitol Reef National Park, this remote enclave is a great place to stop for some coffee, ice cream or dinner on your way in or out of the park.
 
After a long hike on a hot summer’s day, nothing quite hits the spot like ice cream. Located closest to the park, Castle Rock Coffee & Candy has smoothies and ice cream, as well as coffee and handcrafted chocolates. You can also continue on to Slackers Burgers Joint to get one of their famous milkshakes — order at the window and slurp it down in the outdoor picnic area.
 
If you’re a dinner-before-dessert kind of person, Torrey also has several restaurants where you can dig into a hearty meal. The Rim Rock Inn, just outside the park, offers expansive views and two dining options to take in the scenery over a meal — the Rim Rock Restaurant for fine dining, and the more casual Rim Rock Patio. The Rim Rock Restaurant has locally sourced entrees such as pan-seared trout and fruitwood smoked ribs, while the Rim Rock Patio offers up pizza and BBQ.

Many visitors find that Cafe Diablo, an upscale restaurant on the western edge of Torrey, has the most memorable menu in town, featuring southwestern cuisine. Never had rattlesnake before? Now is your chance to try it. Other menu items include pumpkin seed trout and lamb shank tempranillo. It is a lively, busy restaurant that will make for a fun evening.

With live country music and dancing every weekend, the Saddlery Cowboy Bar and Steakhouse is the place to go to get your groove on. It’s cowboy theme is the real deal — a huge mounted bull greets you at the front doors, and the seats on their barstools are real horse saddles. Their meat-centric menu lists everything from prime rib to bison meatloaf to seared elk sirloin — just what you need to fuel up before hitting the big open dance floor.

Finally, it’s worth noting that while Torrey is hardly a thriving metropolis in the summer, in winter the town (at 6,800-feet above sea level) gets quiet. If you find yourself traveling through during the offseason, The Red Cliff Restaurant, which serves up burgers and pizza, is the only place that stays open for lunch and dinner year-round.
